The Wonders of Yunnan
(TRA.YNN 01 : 7 days 6 nights)
Kunming - Dali - Lijiang - The Tiger Leaping Gorge - The First Bend of Yangtze River - The Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

Yunnan is a Chinese word meaning " Southern Cloud" because of its distance and remoteness from the ancient Chinese empire in the north. Home to 24 diverse ethnic minorities, the province is an offshoot of the Tibetan Plateau with an average height of 2,000 m. above sea level. The highest point is the snow clad Kagebo peak at 6,740 m. and the lowest point is the Honghe river (Red river) in Hekou county at 76.4 m. The wide difference in altitudes affects the province's climate to have a snow clad and glacier in the northern mountainous part, a mild spring climate all year round in the central area and a humid, tropical rainforest climate in the south.

Only two hours from Bangkok by flight, we can start to withness the wonders of Yunnan at Kunming the capital of the province - better known as the city of eternal spring. The rapid modernisation is filling the city with department stores, luxury hotels, and huge office buildings. However we can still see stream of people on cycles, and in horse-drawn carts that are filled with all kinds of things, passing down avenues lined with Maple trees. We can see people going to work in the morning and returning home in the evening - a kilometer long procession of cyclists. And to the visitor new to China, a sight that is shocking as well as amusing.

From Kunming we fly to visit Dali - an ancient city kingdom formerly called Nanzhao of the Bai ethnic people about 1,200 years ago. Dali has many natural and historical attractions and is the most favored destination after Kathmandu of Nepal for backpackers. After Dali, we drive 200 km north to the " National Scenic Zone" and "UNESCO's world cultural heritage" of Lijiang in the northwest of Yunnan to visit the Jade Dragon Snow Mountains (the only one of modern glacier in the southern end of the Northern Hemisphere), Jade Peak Lamasery, the Tiger Leaping Gorge (one of the deepest canyon of the world),and the first bend of Yangze River.

We fly back to explore the enormous charm of Kunming and its surrounding including a full day excursion to visit the Stone Forest before return flight to Bangkok.
