Chiang Rai : Karen & Lahu Tribal Lifestyles on Mae Kok River

Chiang Rai has captured the imagination of adventure travellers for her vast land of mountainous area where diverse ethnic people habitat. The hilltribes here have abandoned opium in favor of cold-climate fruit, vegetable and cut flowers, and little plantations of these can be found in the most remote corners, since they are now accessible by road. A trip to these little planter communities offer a chance to explore both the agriculture and the ethnic diversity that has always been a major part of Chiang Rai's charm.
This program lead you to take a boat trip on Mae Kok River in the morning, let you observe elephant's bath and hilltribe lifestyles as well as natural scenery on the banks of the river. First stop at Karen village" Ban Kwae Wua Dam, where you will stay in the first night (homestay 2 pax in a house). Here you can join the Housewife's Group for hand weaving & dyeing, and watch Karen's Sword Dance, nature walk into the Karen's Conservation Forest & plantation. Karen people are very sincerely to everyone and very active in forest conservation. Dinner Karen style will be arranged at home.
On the 2nd day, after breakfast with the host, the farewell ceremony will be arranged by senior Karen to bless all visitors to have a good trip and health all the routes of travelling.Then soft morning walk along the bank of Kok River for 8 kms. to Ban Pha Kwang. Lunch here, then board the boat trip( about 45 mins.) to Lahu Village, Ban Ja Kue. On arrival, warm welcome ceremony will be arranged at Lahu Cultural Center. Visit the Lahu Ritual Center, where the most sacred senior Lahu will welcome all of you. After that separate to stay in people's homes 2 persons per house. In the evening, you will have a great time for cultural exchange- sit on a mat to have a wonderful Lahu Kantoke dinner in an open-air, romantic atmosphere.
On the 3rd day, it's a time to learn about the hosts: their plantation, terrace rice fields, fruit orchards within the village and neighboring village. Picnic lunch will be provided on the bank of Kok River in Ban Huay Rin. After that take the boat ride 10 mins. to visit another Lahu village, Ban Ton Pueng and its plantation before board the boat 2 hrs. to Chiang Rai ( arrive about 17.30 hrs.).
Itinerary :
Day 1 a.m. Meet and pick up at Chiang Rai airport or Hotel in chiang Rai.
Board the boat on Mae Kok River to visit and stay at Karen village " Ban Kwae Wua dam"
Overnight (homestay) with villagers (L,D)
Day 2 Nature walk(8 kms.) to Ban Pha Kwang. Boat trip(45 mins.) to Lahu village " Ban Jakue.
Cultural exchange & homestay in Lahu village (B,L,D)
Day 3 Lahu Village -Visit their plantation - Boat trip to Chiang Rai
( arrive about 17.30 hrs.), transfer to hotel or Chiang Rai Airport (for the flight TG 143 departing
Chiang Rai at 18.50 and arriving BKK at 20.05)
